Coolportunities for July 7

Make a Birthday Happy at the Ronald McDonald House

Many sick children and their families spend their birthdays at the Ronald McDonald House. Happily, the staff keeps "Birthday in a Box" kits on hand to help them celebrate! Assembled and donated by volunteers, there are a few guidelines (no sick people should assemble the items, boxes must be labeled as directed, etc) but this is a fun and easy way to make someone smile.

Light Up the Night! Cincinnati's LLS Light the Night Walk

If the idea of getting up on a Saturday morning at 6 a.m. to run or walk a 5k doesn't appeal to you, here's a charity walk that takes place on a Thursday evening (September 23). The easy two-mile course begins at Sawyer Point. Get a team together to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (my husband is a survivor, so this is near and dear to my heart!) and earn incentives such as Reds tickets and gas cards!

Weekend Scientist: Stream Quality Monitor

This is a great way for those who enjoy our area's waterways to give back! Contact the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to request a booklet containing common invertebrates found in Ohio's streams. The presence and numbers of these organisms helps the state measure stream health. My husband and I are currently studying for this opportunity and plan to help out at the Little Miami. While it does take some time, you can study at your own pace and attend a free training session. After that, they ask that you take samples just a few times per season!
